About 4,000 years ago a giant iron meteorite broke up over northern Argentina, scattering more than 100 tonnes of iron across the Chaco plain. Spanish explorers hunted for its 'table of iron' from 1576, and in 1969 a metal detector found a 28-tonne mass five metres down.
