The Treasure of Childeric: a Frankish king's grave, found in 1653 and stolen in 1831

In 1653 a workman at Tournai, in what is now Belgium, uncovered the grave of Childeric, king of the Franks and father of Clovis, with gold, garnets and a ring bearing his name. Most of it was stolen from Paris in 1831 and melted down.

The Republic of Ireland is different again, and severely so. Searching for archaeological objects without the Minister’s written consent is a criminal offence carrying fines or imprisonment, and the definition is broad enough to cover coins, buttons and buckles of almost any age.
