1 published discovery from Cuba — coins, hoards, jewellery and artefacts recovered by detectorists and archaeologists.
Global Finds has 1 find from Cuba, a famous historical find. It is filed under jewellery. It is the Chorro de Maíta gold bird, made in Colombia AD 1000-1500, buried early 1500s.
The law: In Cuba, as in most countries, archaeological finds are protected by national heritage law: report anything old or unusual to the national heritage authority, and never dig at a known site or export a find without permission.
Between 1986 and 1988 Cuban archaeologists excavated a cemetery at El Chorro de Maíta, near Banes, long known to local farmers for the bones in their fields. A young woman's grave held a hollow gold-alloy bird head 2.3 cm long, later shown to be the work of Tairona goldsmiths in Colombia.
