The Pietroasele Treasure: Gothic gold that survived thieves, fire and a trip to Moscow

In 1837 two quarrymen in Romania found a hoard of Gothic gold known as the Hen with the Golden Chicks. Since then it has been broken up, stolen, saved from a fire and held in Moscow for 40 years.

The Republic of Ireland is different again, and severely so. Searching for archaeological objects without the Minister’s written consent is a criminal offence carrying fines or imprisonment, and the definition is broad enough to cover coins, buttons and buckles of almost any age.
