Late in 1974 a tractor driver ploughing a field near Borovo in northern Bulgaria struck a set of silver-gilt drinking vessels: three horn-shaped rhyta ending in a horse, a bull and a sphinx, a bowl and a jug, some inscribed with the name of a Thracian king.

In 1985 a tractor driver digging to water his vegetable garden in north-west Bulgaria found 65 silver vessels, and archaeologists then found 100 more a few metres away. Many are inscribed with the names of Thracian kings.

In 1972 a young excavator driver digging a cable trench in Varna, Bulgaria, uncovered a Copper Age cemetery full of gold. Made around 4500 BC, it is the oldest worked gold yet found anywhere.

In 1949 three brothers digging clay for a tile works in Bulgaria uncovered nine solid gold vessels, more than 6 kilograms of Thracian gold made around 300 BC for feasting and drinking wine.
